7th July 1892: Bridgnorth Cliff Railway Opens

The Mayor and Corporation met at the Town Hall 12 o’clock, and in their robes marched to the lower station, preceded by the Willenhall Prize Band.

The Corporation got into the car and on arriving at the top  the Mayor said this was a red letter day in the history of Bridgnorth, the opening of steepest railway in England. (Applause!)

The construction had been going since November last, and it had been closely watched by the inhabitants – and was a source of wonderment to them. The Town Council thoroughly appreciated the Improvement made at the bottom of the Stoneway Steps, and also the building of the two stations, which added to the architectural beauty the two. (Applause.)

Bridgnorth had been noted in the past for being all on one side; it would be noted in the future for having the steepest railway in the world. (Applause.) The railway had been constructed for their comfort, and he hoped it would patronised, and that it would prove a success both to the public and the shareholders. (Hear, Hear.) He then declared the railway opened.—The band then played the National Anthem.

Councillor Whitefoot proposed a vote of thanks to the Mayor for performing the opening ceremony —Alderman McMichael seconded the proposition, which was carried amid applause.

 The officials then become busy with the numerous passengers, the charge being 6d up to 4 o’clock, after which was reduced to one penny, the permanent price.
